The Donner Party suffered on the shores of this lake in 1846...162 years later we took on the lake as GNO ("girls night out") made the transition to an all girls weekend.
As naturally athletic individuals we couldn't just take a weekend to relax, shop and party.
Oh no, we had to suffer first. We decided to sign up for a 2.7 mile open water swim in Truckee (Tahoe) at Donner Lake. Everyone we talked to about the swim said, it is cold but tolerable. They also said it is the most beautiful setting, the mountains are picturesque and the water is still as glass. A perfect point to point swim.
We woke up to 45 degree crisp blue skies. It was so freakin cold! I tried not to complain, but "its so cold" just fell out of my mouth about 47 times. I was nervous and cold and the water did look still but it also looked cold!
Just as the pre race meeting began, so did the winds and the newly formed white caps on the water. The waves were crazy! You'd throw your arm around and the wave would take it back. You'd lift your head to check your direction and all you could see was the next wave coming at your face! It was a slightly imperfect race, with a few glitches, like the 35 minutes it took to find my towel. But we all finished and no one ended up in the medic tent hypothermic.
Truckee is a beautiful town, we stayed at an amazing hotel (http://www.cedarhousesporthotel.com/), and ate great food! Cheers to Casey and Brie for an awesome girls weekend!
